What ChatGPT actually does with a photo

Signed in, ChatGPT Images can take a photo you upload and edit it — change the background, adjust the clothing, restyle the lighting. OpenAI documents this directly, and it works. Logged out it does nothing visual at all: we asked on 28 August 2026 and the reply was “Image generation requires logging in.” There is no anonymous route to a single edited pixel.

It is also strong at the parts nobody thinks to ask a chatbot: what to wear for your field, how to light a face with one window, why your current photo reads as amateur, what crop LinkedIn actually shows. That advice is free, unlimited on a free account, and often more useful than another render.

Where it breaks down: likeness

A general image model regenerates the picture rather than retouching it. On a room that means a window moves and nobody minds. On a face it means the jawline softens, the nose narrows, the asymmetry that makes you look like you quietly disappears — and you end up with a handsome stranger. OpenAI says as much about its own editor: “Highlights are not always precise, and edits may extend beyond the area you selected.”

The second problem is consistency. Dedicated headshot tools learn your face from a set of photos and then render many styles of the same person. A chat turn starts fresh each time, so you get one image, then another image of a slightly different person. For a profile picture that is survivable; for a company team grid it is not.

Third, the free tier runs out. OpenAI’s Free Tier FAQ states that image creation carries a separate, stricter usage limit than paid plans and that ChatGPT tells you when you reach it — and headshot work is nothing but iteration.

A prompt worth using — and one worth skipping

Worth using: “Here is my current LinkedIn photo. I work in commercial law in London. Tell me specifically what is wrong with it — light, crop, clothing, expression — and exactly how I would reshoot it with a phone and one window.” That is critique, which it is good at, and it costs no image quota.

Worth skipping: “Turn this selfie into a professional headshot.” You will get something polished that is not quite you, with no way to check the likeness except your own memory. If you go ahead anyway, put the original and the result side by side and ask a colleague who is not in on it whether it looks like you — that is the only test that matters.
